In the hydro-aeroplane contest for tho "Daily Mail" prize of .£5009 for a flight round Britain, Mr. Pickles, the wellknown aviator, relieved Mr. Hawker, who bad suffered a touch of sunstroke after goiug from Yarmouth to Southampton in four and a half hours. Mr. Hawker is suffering from severe eye-strain, owing to having discarded his goggles, and head pains, because he did not use a silencer. He is now improving.
Pickles attempted to resume the flight at 5 a.lll. to-day, but after a Bhort fliglit his machine (a Sopwith biplane) dropped into the sen and became waterlogged. Pickles and ICauper, a mechanic, were in a perilous position, but boats resetted them. Owing to a heavy swell at Yarmouth, the seaplane never rose. The floats became waterlogged, and the machino drifted seawards. The engine then 6tepped, being flooded. The seaplane will be sent back to Southampton, for, re-starting. Mr. M'Lean*. the other entrant for the prize, is a doubtful starter, owing to continued trouble with the engine of his machine. (Ree. August 19, 8.5 p.m.) London, August 19. A South African School of Aviation has ■ been, established at ICimberley, where defence officers will shortly commenoo training.
