THE TURF.
LOMOND SOLD.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBT Glxxcok.l The publication of tho weights for the New Zealand Cup did not causo much discussion in the city. One horse (Bon Ton) was fairly well supported, but whether it was on behalf of the stable or not is unknown. However, his price has shortened, and he is now second favourite, with Masterpiece in tho frout rank. Somo twenty-eight horses were alioard the Mararoa, which arrived from Lyttelton yesterday. Host of them were railed homo during tho day, and tho balance, mostly Hawke's Bay horses, leave by tho early train this morning. At Christchurch oil Monday llr. Jas. Armstrong, of Dannevirke, purchased tho Gold 'Reel mare Eocene, and presumably she will form one of A. Goodwin's team. Last season Mr. Armstrong raced tlm .two-year-old Lady Teazle and Golden Water. The formor has been turned out for a lengthy spell, and Golden Water was made a present to Mr. F. Armstrong, owner of The Spaniard and Morninsf. Tho latter intends tu race Golden Water over steeplechase courses next year.
Jockeys F. D. Jones, A. Oliver, and L. Traill leave for Sydney by Friday's boat. The first-named is going on n lony-pro-mised holiday, Oliver is to fulfil several important riding engagements, and Traill goes over lo ride 11. Hickey's jumpers, who will also be on the same boat. Of the quartet likely to make tho trip, Beacon should easily pay 1113 way for ho_ is very well just now, and even assuming the liandicappers will look alter him, lie is a big horse, and should not bo troubled with a bit of extra weight.
It is said that Mr. C. J. Parker, of Gisbornc, intends racing bo me of his horses in Sydney, and tho others will be sold there. Those he intends to keep will probably go into F. M'Grath's stables at Kensington. The Multifid gelding, liandicappcd at Gst. 91b, in the New Zealand Cup, is a full brother to Multiply, owned by air. C. J. Parker. News from Esierslie states that Mr. F. Kali's filly, Merry Roe, is very forward, and sJiould strip quite at her best for the Avondale Guineas. It will not be quite a onc-horse race for the daughter of Soult, for Tho Hague is likely to bo sent up from Napier for this event. Kilrain arrives from Lyttelton this morning, and on landing J. W. Lowo will take charge of him,-and will in future train him at T-K-ntham. News from Sydney states that N. Cunicgliam disposed of Lucille after that maro won at Wolloiigong' last month. Owing to t'lio failure of C. Brown to get a license from tho Auckland Racing Olub, another rider will iiave to be found at Avondalo for th'-e Obligado filly, Kitty Bellairs, who is stated to be one of tho smartest youngsters in training at Ellerslie. B. Deeley has been offered the mount, and will probably accept it. This youngster appwirs to be a smart begii;ner, a big item, when a irace like the Avondale Stakes is being dec'idcd. During tho Ricca-rton meeting, Windage was priced by a gentleman acting on behalf of a Sydney buyer, : but whether a deal eventuated 13 not yet known. It does not say much for the quality of the handicap horses in the Doininion at the present time when tho C.J.C. handicappor did not consider it necessary, except in the oase of Bobrikoff, to put more than weight for age on any of the horses weighted for the New Zealand Cup. Advices from Sydney stato that, Bleriot and La Rrina havo bsen completely "knocked out" in the market on the Epsom and Metropolitan H-andicaps, and the general opinion t.hera is that they will not make the trip to Uandwick.
(Midnight Sttn, who was injured at Caulfield some tiiao back, was it latest advices improving. He is doing road exercise, but both his hind legs are bandaged.
FOR 12,000 GUINEAS. By Telcsrraph—Press dissociation—Copyright ' (Rec. August 19, 9.30 p.m.) London, August 19. Lord Dunraven has purchased Lomond (Desmond—Lowland Aggi;, 'the wellknown racehorse, from Mr. E. Hulton. It is believed ho paid twelve thousand guineas for him.
