—, —« IMPORTANCE TO SHIPPING. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopyrisht (Rec. August'l9, 8.5 p.m.) Melbourne, August 19. The Navigation Act has received the Royal ■ assent. Under its provisions all steamers trading in Australian waters must comply with Australian conditions of pay and manning. No British or foreign ship without a special license will be allowed to carry passengers between Commonwealth ports.
The Act will not be proclaimed for some time in order to allow owners ample time to make the necessary structural alterations to vessels.
The Act means a tremendous revolution in Australian shipping methods.
