TWENTY-FIVE DROWNED.
.WIRELESS CALL SAVES THE REMAINDER. By Teleeraph—Press Association-Copyright Vancouver, August 18. A tragic shipping disaster is reported from Juneau, in Alaska. The steamer State of California (22G8 'tons, owned by the Pacific Coast Steamship Company) struck an uncharted rock near Cambier Bay, and became a total loss. Twenty-fivo of the passengers . were drowned, the majority of ithem: being asleep in their bunks when the disaster occurred. The steamship Jefferson, was called by wireless, and arrived in time to save forty-two. Many of the crew perished. Some of the passengers were bound to the now gold diggings at Shushanna, where a rich discovery of gold was recen'tly made. (Rec. August 19, 11.5 p.m.) The Californian hit the rocks at full speed, tearing the greater portion of the bottom of the wessel, which sank in a few minutes. Forty of the crew ami forty-threo passengers escaped' in the boats. Although it. was daylight, the vessel sank too quickly to allow of many rescues.
