A "STAGED" AGITATION. ("Times"—Sydney "Sun" Special Cables.) (Rcc. August 18, 8.25 p.m.) London, August 18. Fifty thousand unemployed are demanding, work. The Government, ignoring the demand, is asserting that tho agitation has been "staged" in tho interests of "Social-Democracy" propaganda, MARQUIS OF LINCOLNSHIRE. London, August 17. The Marquis of Lincolnshire has announced his retirement from public life. [Earl Garrington, first Marquis of Lincolnshire (the title "was oreated in 1912), was one-time Governor of New South Wales. From 1905 to 1911 ho was President of the Bo<uxl of Agriculture, and ill 1911 Lordi Privy Seal.]
IMPERIAL APPELLATE COUIIT. • Sydney, August 18. A private" cable message states that Sir Samuel Griffith (Chief Justice of the Federal High Court) has beun offered a seat on tho Imperial Appellato Court, but that no decision has been come to on the offor. DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED. Sydney, August 18. Wright's sentence, has been commuted to imprisonment for life. A report by three medical experts showed that though Wright is not insane, ho is of somewhat unstable mentality. FATALITY ON THE STAGE. London, August 17. During tlhe performance of a drama at the Elephant and Castle Theatre, Herbert Wilson, the hero, was woinidod in tho shoulder by wads from a gun, and succumbed to his injury. WINDFALL FOB LABOURER; London, August 17. It is reported from Balton that a corporation labourer named Lunstall has inherited from his father-in-law, named Westwell, irtio was engaged in the West Australian pearl fisheries.
