The type of cargo shed which the Hobart Marine Board has decided to erect on tho new Hunter Street pier marks quite a. now departure, not only as far as Tasmania is concerned, but also as regards the Commonwealth. It has been tho practice hithorto to build cargo sheds with gable lantern roofs ; Of late years thero has been a great increase in "the height of vessels, and a corresponding difficulty in providing suitable gangways or landing stages that can bo quickly 'handled and easily adjusted; and, moreover, tho movement of a largo number of passengers to and from the ships when the piers are lumbered up with cargo and traffic, congested with vehicles removing or bringing freight, is very Inconvenient, besides being dangerous to pedestrians, this being increased through getting under the ship's slings.- This would have been accentuated at tho now pier, as tho railway is to run on it, provision boing made for a double track on either sido of the shod, as well as a lino through the centre, but the wardens having given full consideration to tho matter. decided to construct two sheds—one with a length of 04(! feet and a width of GO feet, with a flat roof, having a lantern down tho centre. Passongers will, therefore, bo ablo to cross from the ship to tho roof of the shed, walk along the roof and down tho ramp at tho inner end, and thus bo free of tho cargo traflio on the pier.
