GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS EN DOUSED.

(By Tolezraph—Frees Association.) Dunedin, August 18. At a meeting of the Port Chalmers Council to-night th© Mayor, Mr. D. M. Maweon, brought up the matter of tho Government's proposal regarding the election of Mayors. He said the proposal was a step 'in the right direction. If the ratepayers realised that Olio only way to Mayoral lionours was through tho council they would exercise greater oaro and judgment in' the selection of councillors. He moved: "That tho council expresses approval of tho ' proposed legislation, and that a copy of this resolution bo forwarded to Parliament." Considerable discussion followed, and on a show of liands being taken tho motion was carried by five votes to four.
