AN EXTRAORDINARY OCCURRENCE. Tho quietness of Messrs, S. and W. Mackay's bookshop on Lambton Quay was disturbed by an extraordinary occurrence last evening. Just as tho premises were about to bo olosed at 6 o'clock a welldressed man of middle ago walked in from 'tho street, and pulled a revolver out of his pocket. Beiore a movo couid be made to proront him, he put tho weapon to his head, and pulled tho trigger, and was lying on the iloor with blood issuing from a wound in the temple. A doctor was hurriedly summoned, and the injured man—Charles Fellows Page— was taken to tho hospital. ' On inquiry being made at a late hour last night, his condition was reported to bo very serious.

Mr. Page has for some months past been in business at 157 Featherston Street us an advertising specialist, 110 is alx>ut 42 years of age, and is an American by l/irth. He came to New Zealand from Australia some four years ago, and was for some time on tho advertising department staff of the "New Zealand Times." He is a married man. From' the inquiries made by tho police, it appears that Pago was in a hotel in Willis Street with a number of friends earlier in the afternoon, and while there produced six cartridges from his pockets, and showed them to his companions. lie mentioned that his revolver was away being cleaned, and left tho hotel to get it. Before lie went one of his friends suggested that ho should hand the cartridges over to the barmaid, and this was done. When Page had obtained tlio revolver, he returned to the hotel and asked for his cartridges. Tho barmaid gave them to him, and asked where lie was going. To his reply, "I'm going to hell," no significance was attached at the time. Page's movements between tho time of leaving the hotel and tho shooting are not known.
