NOTES ON THE RACING.

(By our Special Reporter.)

After a slight shower or two in the earlier part of tho racing, the weather cleared otf, and tho big crowd which rolled up at lticcartoa for the concluding (hy of tho National meeting were rewarded' with a good day's sport. Some exceptionally close finishes were recorded during tho * afternoon,- and this was the case particularly in the Heathcote Handicap, tho Sydenham Hurdles, tho Redeliffs Handicap,"and the • Selwyn Handicap. Amongst those present were the Governor and suite and prominent sportsmen from all parts of the Dominion. Tho whole of the acceptors went to the post for tho United Hunt Club Steeplechase. Itufus was tho best supported, llufiii ami Kingsway made play for a mile, when Major Webb moved up to tho front rank and Captain Jack also improved his position. With eix furlongs to go, tho leaders were joined by Joueur and Catgain. Jack, and the latter ran to the front as they raced to the last fence, but then Fritz cauie with a well-sustained run, and easily disposed of the leaders. Major Webb, Jouour, Rufus, and Royal Medal finished in that order, and Kiiigsway ran off. A good field of fourteen faced the barrier in the Heathcote Handicap. Royal Anns, with Oliver in tho saddle, was tho public fancy, and he landed the stake, but only after a great finish with Ceylon, who finished with one of her usual rushes and .was only beaten by half a head. At the jump out tho favourite was first to move, but Pilgrim's Way immediately took up the role of pacemaker,_ and led "from Diavolo and the favourite to ' the turn, where Dcelcy on Diavolo rail to the front, and Royal Arms set out ,plter him. This pair looked like having the finish to themselves, but Ceylon then came out, and after a grand struggle tho race went to Royal Arms. Diavolo, Oxcnliopc, and Medallist were tho next . to finish. Undaunted by his dofoat on the middle

day, there were plenty of supporters of l'rince Eddie in the Hack Hurdles, but after having every chance to win he failed badly, and could only run a poor third. The winner turned up ill the Aucklandowned Pip, wln> covered more ground than anything else in tho raee, but eventually won easily from the non-staying Daylight Bill. Tho early running was made bv Overton, but after a mile he closed up, and the placed horses then had it to themselves. Prince Eddie was very sore alter tlio race, and it is likely that .1 M'Langhlin will abandon his proposed trip to Australia, and spell both Princo Eddie and Eoc.h Mabin. Beacon ami I.oeh Mabin were, crnial favourites in tho Sydenham Hurdles, and the former won luckily. Loch Mabin had tlie race well in hand'at the last fence, but he screwed badly, and lost a lot of ground, and at the post both Beacon and Marlon were ill front of him. The latter ran a proat race under his big weight, and with a few more yards to go lie would 'have won. Watchcliain led ovef the first two fences, but at Cutts's Beacon went to the front and the field soon strung out. WimVase was in second place coins down the back, but he tired badly and was well back at the finish. . Nedra was a better favourite than Dorando in the Lincoln Steeples, which resulted in a boil-over for tho little-fan-cied Gold Pin. Gold Pin and Dorando were in tlio van throughout, but when it. came to racing the 'Riecartoii horse was well served by his light weight. Glenmore was stopped by the weight, but lio jumped in his usual proficient style. Bercoia. was tailed off the whole way, but lie completed the course, as did all the others except ICia Ora. Nedra jumped very badly, and was lame behind on pulling' up. Had Dorando not been up alongside of him, Gold Pin would have ran off at several of the fences. As it was, ho nearly had Dorando off at one of the jumps. Another fine finish, was witnessed in the lledcliffs Handicap, in which Achilledes beat th» strongly supported Gold Cup by a nose, with Kithsdale, Stamboul and Scottish Star following. At thq start Debonairo led from Achilledcs, with tho favourite in third place. Tho two lastnamed were together a furlong from home, but Griffen, on the favourite, hejd« Achilledcs too cheaply, and lie. was deleated by a nose. . Oxenhoße, Awahou, Mummer, and Eocono wmb' withdrawn from tho Selwyn Handicap, leaving eight runners. The public went solidly for Winning Way and Kcw. The start was .a straggling one, and when the horses entered the courso proper Theodore and Black laipm were showing the way to ICew, with Winning' Way closing up tho gap. Black Lupin shook Theodore off, but ho had to bo linrd ridden to hold Winning Way, who came very fast over the last half-furlong. Diavolo was third a length away, and then oanio Theodore and Kew. Silkweb and Kilts were badly left, and ran in the icar the whole way.. The finish was so close that very few people could tell which horse had won. The favourite was finishing at such a great rate that tho majority of those present were confident she had won.

After liis good showing in tlie Second Hick Hurdles, it was only to bo.-f.ex-pected that Aha would be "hot" in jtho Hunters' Plato, and the result proved the correctness of tho form,.for after being nicely placcd the whole- way tho Martontrain'ed horso got to the front' over tho last laundrcd yards, 1 and won by a bare length from Kingsway, who was making liis second appearance during the day. Tho winner was well handled by J. Smith, who is not often seen in tho saddle. MARTON NOMINATIONS. Tho following nominations havo been received for the Marton J.C.
