NOTES AND COMMENTS.
ICT GLENum;.! The Grand National Meeting will bo continued at Riecarton to-day. Tho fields will not be so largo as on'tho first day, but thcro is ample material to ensure interesting sport.' Tne Grand National Hurdlo Handicap will be Hie chief attraction. Eighteen horses still claim engagements, and all but three of them were racing on the opening day. The most fancied is Loch llaben, who, though practically a. beginner at the eame, is held 'in ereat
esteem by bis connections. Yesterday morning ho comfortably beat Beacon over a mile, ami, indeed, he has beaten everything that lie has galloped with on the flat. Tho only doubt is as to his jumping, but his trainer stales that he is a perfect fencer, Marton (list. 51b.) must always be reckoned with, for his form this .season has been very consistent. Another lior.se that is sure to show up is Goodwin Park, lied Karl surprised everybody by the prominent position he occupied in the finish, of the Jumpers' Flnt race. What will tell greatly in Loch Maben's favour is that lie has the minimum impost, which will enable liiin to finish oil well.
In tho Hunt Club Cup, Captain Jack, who is a great jumper, will probably be flic best supported, and as he has done a fair amount of racing he may be depended upon to run out the threo miles.
.Several fresh horses are engaged in tho Summer Handicap, but the public are not likely to go outside of Teviotdalo and Scottish filar. The latter finished on well in the Avonhead Handicap, and should be well suited by the extra two furlongs.
For the August Handicap Crown Pearl (11st 31b.) seems to be remarkably well in, wlton one takes his Ellerslio form into consideration. A. Oliver will have tho mount, ami it is remarkable how successful ho has been on tho Coronet gelding.
Willi the first day's winner out of tho way, Gleninorc may be made favourite in the Beaufort Steeples, which event ho won last year. Tim Doolan put up good time in the Enfield Steeples, and was going on at tho finish, so lie must bo handy in tho race. The Spaniard would Iw better suited by a longer journey, mid the others are hardly class enough. 1
Tho Auckland mare Sphinx will be a starter in the Hack Hurdles, in which the field is very weak. Prince Eddio does not seem to be rijjht, and the others have no form to recommend them.
Kilroin (lOst. 121b.) is at- the head of the list ill tho Islington Handicap, and is sure to be well supported. Ho is such a good beginner, and finished on ■well at the end of the Winter Cup, that it is hard to get away from liini. Awahou liad every chance in tho Winter Cup, but. Bulletin was chopped out badly, and then ran on well over the closing stages of tho race. Glenfinnan was nc-ver prominent, and does not seem to bo a welter horse. Royal Arms was in the forward division the whole way, but died out of it over tho last half fnrlong. He may not be class enough, for he is a long time in justifying tho heavy support that lias been accordcd him on different occasions.
Old Medallist will bo on hand again for tho Woolston Plato, a,iul at present he looks as well as over ho did. The strength of the opposition will centro in Orton, who has been galloping well on the tracks, but who is far from reliable.
