BRITISH FORCE ATTACKED BY . DERVISHES. MAXIM GUN JAMS. By Telegraph—PrCß3 Association— Copyright London, August 12. It is officially stated that over 1000 Bsrvishes between Berbera and Odwein on Saturday last attacked a detachment of 150 of tho Camel Constabulary, which had been dispatched to"' suppress intertribal looting. The Constabulary's rotreat was cut off, and they formed a zareba. The Maxim gun got jammed. Colonel Corfieltl, the commanding officer, was killed, and Captain G. H. Summers severely wounded, whilo fifty Constabulary were killed or wounded. The Dervishes withdrew, with heavy losses, when their ammunition was exhausted. A British relief column functioned with the Constabulary near Burao, and is preparing to resist further attacks. London, August 12, Mr. Lewis Harcourt, Secretary of State for the Colonies,'announced in tho House of Commons'that 300 troops from Aden, "and a gunboat, have been sent to Berbera.
