KARORI COUNCIL.
Several interesting matters were d;sonssed at last nignt's meeting of tho Karori Borough Council, which was presided over by the Mayor (Mr. Clias. Cathie). Tho o.crk staled that arising out cf tho minute passed at the last council meeting, "That irom a sense of . duty townixK the Dominion, and as a me.ins of agisting tho Health Department in the present crisis, the council take prompt steps to impress upon the re-sidlf.nts tho necessity for immediate vaccination," that two school children and one adult had been vaccinated. The traffic superintendent wrote that the car timed to leave Coiirtenay Place to Karori Park on July 21' at '5.32 p.m., was eight minutes late owing to the loss of a trolly head in the Kilbirnie tunnd, and that owing to reeent complaints as to the Karori wrvico between five and _ sis o'clock, the • departure of cars from Cot!.rtenay Place was receiving sp:c:al, attention.
In reply to the council's resolution urging that steps bo token to roduce Hie risk?? of accidents at level railway crossings*, the lion. AY. H. Jlerries (Minister for Railways) stated that instructions had been giv-an to the. different-district engineers of the' Railway Department to report on those crossings in their respective districts which : were considered dangerous, and when these reports were received, the question !of the. adoption of means of minimising risks would bo gone into-carefully, and some method devhed which would have that result. . Tho Health Inspector reported that a ease of scarlet fever existed at the premises of Mr.'Blight, Park vale Road, Karon, .and that tiio patient was isolated at home. Approval was asked by Messrs; Beore and Greenish, architccts, Wellington, to . the plan of a *6500' house to be bur-It in I M-acdouald Street, the rooms of which being nine feet high did not come within tits provisions of;? the council's by-laws, .which require the height to be ten feet. . The' necessary permission was granted, and tha plan-approved^ The tender of Air. M. Sedgwick for the .supply of chaff'at £b 10s. pstr ton, bran at Is/ Id. per bushel, and crushed oats at 3s. per bushel, was Accepted for the next three months. Approval was given to the suggested improvements laid down by the lutruri Beautifying Society, which included tho planting of creepers in front of MivDr.vdcn's hou?e, a row of trees along the main road between Standen and Johnston Streets, shrubs and trees on the land alongside tiho road in -Brill Street, and cieepcr.s on the bank Mongfide Mr. Mom's residence. Councillor Davies suggested that *-4 tickets to Northland be fold for iis. for use on Sundays, but it- was agreed that though same .concession would have to l:e made, when the motor, buses started, it was not advisable to make any change at present. • Councillor Lewer moved that a deputation bo appointed to wait upon ths Agricultural Department urging that extreme measures should-be taken under the NoxiOils Weeds Act to cope with the growtn of gorse, and remarking that property was depreciating every year to a very great ex- > tent through the gorse bring allowed to spread. This was agreed to, and Councillors Lewer, Burn, and Boyes were appointed "to form tlio deputation.^ Councillor Skegg drew attention to the fact that dates had been set apart- for tno plaving of two principal hockeymatches on "the Basin Roservo at Wellington, whereas it was understood that all tho re-, p'resentiitivo niatdiES should be played at karori.. It was a broach of faith, ami onlv a small cotorie desired tho matches to be plaved on the Basin Reserve. "he Hockey Association should be asked why thev had asked the City. Coun-cil-'for permission to nl-ay two principal matches with Olago and Auckland on the Basin Reserve when it had been agreed to plav them at Karori. •, Councillor Danes seconded, but Councillor Burn contended that the Hockey Association had more than kept faith with that council, as the agreement was that tliev should play seven matches at Karon, whereas ten or t'wetve had been played there. The motion was agreed to.
