Tine death occurred at Auckland on Sunday morning (says our special correspondent) of Mr. Joseph l'euiialligen, a veteran of the Crimea, lie was a member of the 12th Brigade of Koyal Artillery, and was at the siege of Sebaslopol. Arriving in Auckland in 1859, Jlr. Pcnnalligen saw further active service in the Maori war. He hold three medals, including that for t'li'3 Turkish war, and the New Zealand war lnifdal. For twenty-five years Jlr. Pemialligcu was employed in the Government Defence Stores, but during the la.st quarter of a centuiry ho has lived ill retirement. lis was 86 years of age, and leaves
a widow and one son. ' A Jfaori war vstcran, Jlr. Edward Donnelly, died at tho Auckland Hospital on Sunday, at the age of 76 years. Deceased' (says our local correspondent) was a native of Ireland, and when quite a young man 'he went to Australia. He came to . Nov.- Zealand in 1803, and served with distinction ill tli9 New Zealand forces, being present at the Battle of Orak.au. Subsequently lis was engaged ill farming pursuits at Kailiu.' For tho past y®hr 'Jlr.' Donnelly had been a resident of tho Veterans' Home. Jlr. M. Seollard, of Blenheim, is on a visit to Wellington. Jlr. L. Seifcrt, of Palmerston North, is at present on a visit to Wellington. Jlr. T. W. Kirk, of tho Orchards Division of tho Department of Agriculture, is duo back from trip to the Pacific Islands on Monday week. Lieutenant-Colonel G. N. Johnston, Director of Ordnance, left for Palmerston North yesterday to inspect tho artillery section of the "refresher" camp, which is now being held there. Jlr. I'. E. Purser, Town Clerk, Lower Hutt, who leaves shortly to_ take up a similar position iu Hastings, is to be fareiwiled next Jlonday evening by tho Mayor and councillors, and presented with a memento in recognition of past services. Holly was borli in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 183 G. Ho landed at Melbourne in 18G0 by tho ship Champion of the Seas, and crowing the Tasman Sea in the early days of tho Otago diggings, visited tho mining centres of tho South Island. After revisiting Victoria, Jlr. lla'lly returned to New Zealand, and in 18G7 purchased a farm at Waitohi, whore he remained up to two years ago, when lie erected a house and lived in retirement at Temnka. Jfe leaves a widow, two sons, and four daughters.
