IN INDIA. RIVER EMBANKMENTS COLLAPSE. Bj Teleßraph—Press Association—OopyrlsM (liec. August 11, 9.20 p.m.) Calcutta, August 11. Owing to tho collapse of tho embankments along the Danyidar River, in Bengal, during heavy rains, a number of villages liavo been destroyed, with great los 3 of life. : (Roc. August 11, 11.30 p.m.) Bardwan, on tho left bank of tho Damodar, is six feet under water. Of its 30,000 inhabitants, only 200 reached tho railway station. Terrible loss of life is feared. Tho rail, way lino is submerged for fifteen miiles, cutting off communication. . Miles of country is flooded, and thousands mado homeless and starving. Houses have been washed away, and cattle destroyed. The valleys of the Damodar,' and of its chief tributary, the Barakhar, contain tho coalfiolds which produce alxnit four-fifths of tho total amount of coal raised in British India.'
