ULTIMATUM TO PETONE. For some time past a good deal has appsared regarding tho gas supply agreement between tho Hutt and Petone Borough Councils. Tho proposal was that l'etouo should supply the Hutt Borough with gas for lighting purposes, and in three years' time this agreement will expire. Tho question of extending the existing agreement has been under discussion, and a week ago a. deputation representing the Lower Hutt. Borough Council waited on Pctono Council, suggesting a few amendments to the latter council's proposals. At Just evening's meeting of tho Hutt Council a letter was 'received from tho' Town Clerk of Petone Council stating; that "after duly considering your council's suggestions, this council could not see its "way to give effect to. tho request, of the deputation." • The Mayor (Mr; E. 1\ Bunny) moved that tho Petone Council's first offer bo rejected, and, that they bo advised that the Lower Hutt Council is preparing to discuss tho question, of providing its' own lighting. Councillor Kempthorne expressed disapproval of tho niotipn. Ho did not think tho council should decline the Petone Council's oiFor.
Councillor Dawson: I don't agree with Councillor Kempthorne Councillor Kempthorne: You nover do!
Continuing, Councillor Dawson contended that the Mayor's . resolution was .1 straight-out answer, .which ho oonsidered was necessary. Ho congratulated the Mayor on his business-liko -methods. .
After discussion, tho Mayor withdrew his motion in favour of tho-following:— "That the Petone Borough Council bo requested to forward another offer within three weeks, failing which this council will consider tho question of providing its own lighting."
Councillor Kemptluorne remarked that he was satisfied thai;, upon further consideration, tho Petone Council would meet tho Hutt.
Councillor Dawson expressed the opinion that the Mayor's motion was a littlo weak, and ho suggested amending . it. After spending some time in drafting, the motion afresh, Councillor Dawson, said, in moving it: "This is something like the mcition wliich your Worship proposed—only a littlo stronger. I move:— 'That the Pctone Borough Council be informed that, as they could not see their way to accept any of the suggestions to their proposal for a further term of seven years, this council declines their offer contained in their -lotter of July 29, and jiroMeds to discuss the advisability of providing their own lighting. Should the Petone Council wish to make any suggestions they must be seat to this council not later than threo weeks from this date.'" Tho Mayor then withdrew his motion in favour of the above, which was carried.
