LACROSSE.
SATURDAY'S CHALLENGE MATCH. Tho special challenge match between the representative lacrosse team and the next best twelve was played on the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, and resulted conclusively in favour of the;representatives. The fixture attracted considerable interest, and soino lino attack play whs shown by the winners. Their combination did not, however, seem to bo of a certain nature, but rather of a speculative character, although the catching was invariably good. A quickening of tho passing and less lobbing seem to bo required, Estcourt, at first 'home, was in fine form, and scored some pretty goals. Grant, Leydon, Andrews, and Fa ma also played creditably, and with special practice during the week should combine well together next Saturday. The representative defence did not have any sustained calls upon. its resourcefulness, the play being quickly transferred to the opposite goal. O'Leary, Canty, and Burgh were the best of tho defenders. The Rankin brothers were also prominent. Proud was the best defence man. on the field, and lias, deservedly, been .included in tho representative team, replacing Burgh at point. Jones, Casey, Firth, and AVilson ,were the best of the second attack, whilst Wootton, Jordan, and Deo defended well. Mr. A. C. Jantke was referee. The representative team will meet for special practice at Kelburae Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Auckland team is expected to arrive'-oil Friday ufternoon, and is reported to 1)0 o strong combination. Tho Proud Challenge Shield, of which Auckland are the holders, will be on view during tho week at Speed's, Lambton Quay. R. Rcnkin "has been selected as captain of tho Wellington representatives.
