SUSPECT FOUND AT LOWER HUTT.

A smallpox suspect ns discovered at Lower Hutt on Saturday in the person of n Maori child. The Deputy-Chief Health Ofliaer (Dr. Frengley) informed a reporter yesterday that tho disease had not been definitely diagnosed as smallpox, but that ■ the patient had been isolated, and all precautions takeii. The child has been sent to .the isolation ward of'the Infectious Diseases Hospital, which is now tenanted by two patients, the first being a maid belonging to 'tho household of Mr. V. H. Reed; M.P. The details of tho Hutt case are reported as' follow:—About 300 yards from white's Line, on tho Waiwotu Road, is tho home'of lloti T ti-Paki, an employee of tho Hutt Borough Council. A Maori 1 tangi was recently held at his house, and ' about twelve relatives are lodged there. Among others were Rangitua (son of Itoti-ti-Paki), his - wife, "and daughter Minnie, aged 2} years. The little girl was not well when Ivor parents left tlioir home in Taranaki for tho' tangi, and developed such symptoms that she was suspected of having contracted the cpidemic, and she was removed to the Isolation Hospital. ■Up till a late hour lost night it was- not certain what the disease was. The houso, with its inmates, is now isolated, no one being allowed in or out of it, and tho police at . Hutt are keeping a strict watch. No word of tho epidemic,in tho north camo to Wellington through official channels during tho week-end, and Dr. Frengley stated yesterday that ho had nothing to add to the bulletin issued on Pridny night. NORTHERN REPORTS. SEVEN MORE CASES DISCOVERED. By Telecraph—Press Association—Oopyrlshl Auckland, August 10. : No less than seven new oases of the proroiling .cpidemic were located yesterday afternoon, and transferred to the Isolaiton Hospital at Point Chevalier. Four of them (all Natives) wero found off Upper Queen Street, where there are some Maori boaidinghouses. One European case was found in Ponsonby, and two more ; Maoris were brought up from Waiheke Island. A case occurred' in Marmion Street three weeks ago, and it is thought that tlioso now affected are contacts. Tho.
