POLITICAL REFORM LEAGUE
CONGRATULATION TO ME, MICKEL, A meeting of the Dominion Executive of tho Now Zealand Political Reform Leaguo was held at the league offices, Ballnneo Street, on Saturday. Tho Hon. W. F. Massey occupied tho clmir at tho commencement of tho proceedings, but having to rceeivo a deputation at the Parliamentary Buildings at 10.30, his placo was taken by Mr. E. W. Alison. A large amount of business was transacted, .some import-ant matters being finally decided. Reference was made by the president (Mr. Massey) and the 'chairman to tho gallant fight mado by Mr. H. .Michel for tho Grey seat, and the general secretary was instructed to write Sir. Michel conveying' tho congratulations of tho oxecutivo upon the moral victory, which it was generally felt ho liad gained on tho coast, Tho following resolution, proposed by 1 Mr. E. W. Alison, and support* ed by Messrs. Scott, Von Ilaast, and Morison, was carried unanimously:—"Thai this executive desires to placo on recordi its hearty appreciation of tho splendid fight iiwdio on behalf iof tho Reform causa by Mr, Hi Michel, (hiring the rocent election contest for tho Grey seat, and heartily congratulates that gentleman, and his ablo lieutenant, Mr. David Jones, upon his very satisfactory achievonient at both tho first and second bal: lots, tyhich practically reduced' tho strength, of the Liberal party in tho Grey to 1500. -While regretting _that completo victory did not' reward his efforts, tho executive looks confidently forward to seeing Mr. Michel returned to Parliament nt no distant date, and feels kui'O that 'ho will justify the confidence of the electors who liavo tho honour of returning him." Satisfactory reports were presented in ■regard to the monthly journal, "Light and Libsrty," and tho finances were alro reported to 'be. in a healthy condition, although it was pointed out that very considerable sums wcro needed for organisation and campaigning work. The secretafv wtw instructed to, notify the several ' ."of ii.the;-.rloaguß throughout tho Dominion that the general conference would bo held on Saturday, October 4, and Monday, October .6,. and to ask for the appointment of del<?gatos, all remits' for the" order paper to be in tho general secretary's hands not Wcv than September 4. The executive decided to recommend the conference to inereaso the strength of the executive to fifteen instead of eleven as nt present, and to provide for tho inclusion of at least thireo Wellington residents on tho executive. Sub-com-mittees we.ro appointed to deal with tho report and remits, and to make all necessary arrangements for holding tho conference," and also to arrange for tho preparation of the branch charters, cto. Applications for the formation of branches of tho lca?uo liavo been received from a number of places, including Nelson ami Temuka, .in the South Island. and such branches will be formed at tho earliest opportunity.
