♦ THEATRE ROYAL. • Those who have not seen Van Camp and his educated pig will have a last opportunity of doing so at the Theatre Royal to-night. Other turns will also be put on for the last time. Among the performers in the present company, who are ; nightly received with applause, are Mas iDufl'ek, musical contortionist; The Rosebuds, song and dance artists; Corona, cornet soloist; and Carmen and Laurance, in ! lEong and story, "SMART SET." Before an appreciative audience last night tho "Smart Set" repeated tho week's programme for tho last time. To-night j Mr. Maynard Dakin, Miss Gcorgio Martin, and tho other members of this clever company will.appear at the Opera House. An entirely new and original programme will bo presented—all the items being guaranteed by the management as new to this city. A miniature musical corned}', "The Bandits," will be included. HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE. His Majesty's Theatre was well patronised last evening, when Prosper Merrimee's delightful version of "Carmen"-was again screened. The orchestral accompaniments, which include the bowitching "Carmen" melodies, are played by the Symphony Band, and they form a. feature of'the programme. "Carmen" and supporting items' will be screened this afternoon and in the evening. THE KING'S THEATRE. A lengthy but interesting comedy, entitled "Tho Holy Taste" is the principal picture on the current programme at the ! King's Theatre. "New Neighbours" is a very breezy American comedy, which tells of the troubles of a jealous husband. "One Good Turn, etc.," is the caption of an excellent Vitagraph dramatic study, featuring one of that company's most popular artists. Miss Florence Turner, i There will bo a matinee this afternoon, ! and tile-programme will be screened again this evening. . THE EMPR.ESS THEATRE. The present programme of the Empress Theatre continuous picture will appear for. the last time to-day and to-night. Tho Nordisk "feature" drama, "The Fugitives," is ti story of a sensational elopement. ' Tho runaway couple leave the country in a. Zeppelin passenger airship. The girl's father telegraphs to tho authorities that her fiance is insane. Ho is arrested, and put into a lunatic asylum. Tho girl assists him to escape, but thoy lravo another startling adventure before they get free from danger. The sensational A.B. drama, "A Dangerous Foe," "Tho Orlears" (acrobatic act), and "Tho Recreation of an Heiress" (A.B. comedy) are also entertaining items. A now series will bo screened on Monday. THE GREAT M'EWEN. Hypnotism is one of the principal at-, tractions in the programme which is to be presented at tho Opera House on Monday. night by tho Great M'Ewen. Besides showing the ability of Mr. ;M'Eiven as a hypnotist, tho performance, •it is claimed, will demonstrate what can' lie accomplished by tlu: mysterious, force. In tho first part of the programme tho Scottish entertainer will accomplish a number of playing-card and other tricks of great' variety. Ho win bo assisted by Miss Florence Hartley, prima donna, who will be heard in operatic selections, and Mr. Will Bolton, champion specialty dancer, will give exhibitions of Scotch dancing. The musical director of the company is Mr. Cecil Long,' a noted Australian pianist. The box plan is at the Dresden, where seats can be reserved without any extra charge. Day sales at Christeson's.
THE JULIUS KNIGHT SEASON. J. C. Williamson, Ltd., in our advertising. column* this morning, announce the return of that popular artist, Mr. Julius Knight, who will be supported by Miss Irene Browne and J. C. Williamson, Ltd.'s, New English Comedy Company., The opening performance of the, tour is to take place on Thursday evening,' August 21, at tlio Opera House, when Messrs. Arnold Bennett and Edward Knoblanch's new comedy, "Milestones," will be presented for tho first time in New Zealand. The new comedy is noted as a fascinating storv dealing with tho periods of 1860, 1885, and 1912, and is described as a play of. great charm, sentiment, and humour. "Milestones" comes with a brilliant reputation from London, America, and Australia. In addition to .the new comedy tho repertoire for the season will include a number of other established successful plays. The box plan for the opening performances irill bo on view at the Dresden on Monday, August 18, at 9 a.m. ROYAL CHORAL'SOCIETY. ' Tlie popular oratorio "Elijah" will be performed in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening next by the Royal Wellington Choral Society, under the baton of Mr. •Christian Hcllomann. It is now six years since, the Choral Society performed this work, tho soloists on that occasion being: Mrs. Orr Loring,, Miss Mina Caldow, Messrs. John Prouse, and J. Puschel. For its performance on Tuesday night, the society has engaged Madauif Mary Conly, the great English oratorio singer, to sustain the soprano rolo. Madame Edith Brainsby will sing the contralto. Mr. Harry Phipps tenor, and Mr. John Trouso the bass. "Cast Thy Burden" is usually taken by tho four principals, but on this occasion it is to be sung by tho chorus. The final rehearsal will bo held in tho Town-'Hall on Monday, at 7.30 p.m., to which visitors will not ho admitted. Tho tox plan is said to be rapidly filling, but 3s. and 4s. can be reserved. Tho 2s. and Is. tickets are now on sale at the Dresden. Hutt and Johnsonville trains bo delayed till after the performance. , SUNDAY ORGAN RECITAL. The series of Sunday afternoon organ recitals iu the Town Hall will bo continued by Dr. FyfVc to-morrow. The programme has been selected with care by Dr. Fyfte. The numbers to be played are- "Air With Variations" (Mozart), "Le3 Eameaux" (Faure), "Intermezzo" (Driffield). "Aubade" (StelesJci), and "Three Movements Sonata VI (truilniant).
