CITY ACCIDENTS. A single man named George Tonks, living in Pnranaki Street, was admitted to tlio Hospital yesterday afternoon with a broken leg. A wlmrf labourer, Henry Mellstead, had a nasty fall yesterday, when working on a. steamer which was being coaled from a hulk' moored , alongside. Mellstead, who is a married man, living at Kaiwarra, lost his footing and fell from tho deck of tho steamer on to the hulk, a distance of ten or twelve feet. At the inquest 011 AVilliam Kittclsen, a seaman 011 the Ahuriri, who lost his life through a surf-boat capsizing at Mohaka, tho coroner found that death was the result of an aceidont. Ho added a rider that regulations wero necessary requiring surf-boats, and oil launches used for surfing to be'licensed.

JOCKEY SERIOUSLY INJURED. Hastings, August G. ' A jockey named W. Woods, attached to James Munn's training stables, met with a serious accident on the racecourse. Woods had been exercising tho horso Waipuroku, and was riding back to tho scraping sheds, when tho horse staggered and dropped dead, rolling heavily on his rider. It was apparent that Woods was seriously injured, and ho was* removed in an ambulanco to tho Napier Hospital, when an examination disclosed serious injuries to tho spine. This afternoon Woods was in a criticol condition, and fatal results are feared. FATAL WAIICARARA FIRE. Auckland, August C. Fire at Waikar.iTa, near Awanui, at 5 o'clock this morning, destroyed a boordinghouse, occupied by F. P. Riley, who perished in tho iiro, ■ SAD OCCURRENCE. Pahiatua, August G. Mrs. J. Dick, wifo of Mr. James Dick, a well-known and highly-respected settler in the Ngaturi district, was found drowned in tho Tiraumea River early this morning. She liad not been in good health lately, and had passed a restless night. Mr. Dick preceded about 12.30 a.m. to get her some stimulant, but discovered shortly afterwards that she liad disap. pearcd. With a neighbour, 110 made a search, but could find no trace of Mrs. Dick. Tho search was renewed with tho assistance of neighbours at daybreak, tho body being found caught in a willow tree in a water-hole about seven chains from the river bank.
