Clemens afterwards went outside, and Ireland followed immediately afterwards, but returned to tho house a couplo of minutes later, took off his boots, and was walking towards his bedroom when Clemens called out: "Fred, come out! There's a liorso hung up in tho wires!" Mrs. Ireland said: "Is that Bill singing out?" Ireland replied in the affirmative. Ho then went outside towards Priest's fence (about three chains from Ireland's house), and, on getting near, tho top of tho intervening ridge, Ireland, as ho could not see Clemens, called out: 'Whereabouts?" Clemens replied: "Hero!" Ireland states that, immediately afterwards ho saw a flash, and felt a burning sensation about his loft arm, fcft leg, and the lower part of his abdomen. Ho fell, and, on rising, another shot was fired, but it did not hit him. Ireland says that 110 then hesitated as to whether lio should rush Clemens, but, seoing a man opening tho breach of .1 gun, he thought 110 was going to have another shot, and: thereupon decided to get away.
