CHANNEL TUNNEL.
SCHEME REVIVED. DEPUTATION TO MR. ASQUITH. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, August 5. A deputation that' waited on the Prime Minister in favour of a tunnel under tho English Channel between England and France, pointed out tho development of aerial navigation, and stated that the French Government was favourable to the Channel proposal, the carrying out of which would cement the Entente. Tho cost of a double tunnel would bo eighteen millions, an amount that would be readily subscribed. Mr. Asquith said the Committee on Imperial Defence was reconsidering the tunnel question. (R-ec. August 7, 0.50 p.m.) London, August 6. The personnel of thp Channel tunnel deputation represented all sections of tho House of Commons. In his reply, Mr. Asqiiith said that tho reversal of repeated decisions could not be lightly undertaken. Ho agreed that there wero new factors which almost dissipated previous strategic objections. Tho Government realised tho importance of an unimpeded food supply connection with the Continent.
