A Winter Fair. Yesterday afternoon the Winter pair, organised "by the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Y.M.O.A. for tho benefit of the Y.JI.C.A. was opened in the /Assembly Hall of the association's buildings. Jinny paoplo attended the fair during the afternoon and evening; and although there have been many demands upon the by no means unlimited depths of purses, very satisfactory results accrued from the (lay's adventure. The stalls had been very prettily draped and decorated for the ' occasion, and their contents made strong appeals to those present. . The flower stall was quite a glory of blooms, flowers having been seen from the Wairarapa,. Hawke's Bay, Otaki, Blenheim, nnd other faraway places. The plain and fancy work, tho produce stall, and, indeed, all of them, were well supplied with unusually attractive articles. In the evening an excellent entertainment of all sorts, organised lnrgely by Mr. Varney, look place. It comprised pathoscopic pictures, a fancy-dress basket-ball match played in an adjoining room, and a concert. In addition, there were such attractions us ■ n live "Aunt Sally"— unhappy creature— who was unmercifully pelted with balls (soft ones, certainly), a hat-trimming competition, as well as all the other kinds which are usually organised for such events. The stall-holders were as follow :— Kitchen and provision stall (conveners), Mi's. Dumbell and Jlrs. Montague, assisted by Aliss Urittain; plain stall, Jlrs. i'ossetto (convener), Miss Hustwick, Jlrs. Ingram, Jlrs. White; doll stall, little Miss Doreen Kersley nnd. Miss Lenna Pinlay; baby stall (conveners), Jlrs. Ilott and Mrs. Kersley, assisted by Jlrs. Varney, Jlrs. Coote, Jlrs. Dixon, Jliss Cotter, Jliss Smith, and Jlrs. Rouse; flower stall, Jlrs. Low, president of tlio auxiliary and convener of the stall, assisted by Miss Spilman, Jliss Low, and Miss Richardson; fancy stall (conveners), Jlrs. Gregg and Mrs. Grant, assisted by Jliss Offegg; sweet stall (convener), Jliss Hatch, assisted by Jlrs. Couzons and Jlrs. T. L, Cox; book stall (convener), Miss Fossctte, assisted by .Miss Possotto and Jliss Luke; ten room "(convener), Jlrs. Kelly, assisted by Jlrs. Bennett, Jlra Brown, Jliss Wilson, and many others. The fair is continued this afternoon and evening. District Nursing Guild, Tho monthly meeting of the District Nursing Guilif of St. John wns held yesterday aftorncon, when tho following members of tho committee were present: —Jlrs. W. H. S. Jloorhouse, Jlrs. E.- Bal-combe-Brown, Mrs. S. IJ. Tripe, Jlrs. A. A.- Corrigaii, Airs. S. It-. Gyles, Jliss Jl. E. Robieson, Nurso Jlacandrow, and Jlrs. 1 W. B. Fisher (lion, secretary). An apology was tendered for the absence of tho president, who was not well enough to attend. The senior district nurse submitted tlio report for July, which indicated a great deal of sickness in the homes of tho poor, but there is generally an increase in the number of cases during tlio winter months, A total of 22 additional patients were registered, 21 were discharged, 4 were takeii to tho General Hospital, and 3 died. Nurses Jlacandrew ,nnd Walton paid 431 visits, dispensing medicine and comforts. The committee acknowledge with thanks a subscription of .£1 Is. from Jlrs. Pearson, and gifts in kind from Jlesdames Denton, ltichardson, Lissack, Mason, Johnstone, Elliott, Dennislon, Jloorhouse, Jliss Jones, and the Gear Company.
Mrs. Toswil'l (Hastings) will pass through Wellington oil her way to the Grand National in Christchiireh, and during her stay here will bo .the ;^iit.st of her sister, Mrs. A. Crawford.
Mr. <»n<l Mrs. Trouitbeck (Napier) arc visitors to Wellington.
Mr. H. M. Campboll, M.P., and Mrs. Campbell (Hawke'a Bay), Mr. and Mrs. J. Bull (Hunterville), and Mr. and Mrs. M'Kelvie (Feilding) aro all going to Cbristchurch for 'he National.
Mrs.' Fred. Riddiford, accompanied by Miss Hutchison (England) has arrived in Wellington from Napier, where both have been "Staying for-some little time.
Mr. and Mrs. Arkwright ("Overton") arrived in town for last night's dance at Government Houss, and later will go down to Christchurch for the Grand National.
Miss Hodgkiug is .expected to arrive in Wellington to-day from Dunedin, and during her stay in Wellington she will bs the guest of ha: sister, Mrs. W. IT. Field.
Mrs. C. J. Parr (Mayoress of Auckland) arrived in Wellington yesterday from Sydney, and will stay at the Royal Oak for a few days, before returning to Auckland.
Mrs. W. Wardell and Miss Tnlly (Masterton), who have been staying in-Na-pier, have motored through to Dannevirke, and return to Masterton at the end of tho week.
Mrs. John Barton (Trenfhnm). who has been staying at the Masonic Hotel, Napier, for the past ''two month?, returned to her home <m Monday.
Miss"Carey (Masterton) is the guest of Mrs. Jamc3'Bell, "Twyford."
Mrs. Bateson and her little son. have returned to Trentham from their visit to Napier.
Mrs. and Miss Cutten (Duncdin), who havo been staying at the Royal Oak for somo days, gave a morning tea there ;n Wednesday, at which many Duiiedm friends -resident in Wellington were present.

A Farewell Tea. Yesterday afternoon Mrs. Kichelbnnm entertained a very largo miinber of guests at a farewell tea given for Mrs. Jl'Gavin, who with Dr. M'(iavin leaves Wellington to-day by the Arawa for Beautiful -prins flowers were to be seen in all the room?, the anemones, cyclamen, and violets, which decorate'.! the dining-room whore tea was net, being particularly lovely. Little ornamental seagulls and a little model of the Aiwa upon the teatable were very suggestive, of tlio coming voyage for the travellers. Mrs. David Pindlay played a pianoforte solo during the afternoon, Hiss Helen Anderson sang, Jlrs. Malcolm Ross recited, and up-tairs a fortune-teller investigated the future for curious guests. Mis. Hichelbaum wore a gown of soft'grey charmetise veiled with blue ninon draped with beautiful lace. Jlrs. M'Gavin was also in grey charmeuse, with a grey hat massed with grey ostrich feathers. Miss lioreliardt. was in grey with touches'of black. Miss Anderson, Miss' Wilberfoss, Miss Focke, and Miss Macintosh assisted Jlrs. Eichelbaum with the tea. Among those present were: Mrs. Massry. Mrs.- Taylor, Mrs. Herdnian, Lady Stout. Mri. Chapnian, Jlrs. L. H. li. Wilson, Mrs. 1\ Dyer, Jlrs. K. Gilmer, Jlrs. Keniber, Jlrs. Campbell, Jlrs. Anderson, Mrs. Martin, Jlrs. Wilberfoss, Jlrs. W.
