UNUSUAL THEFT CASE.

I 1 S.M., at Ihe Police Court this morning, when a we 11 -ci ressc d man, «"l) years of aye, named Arthur Hobwt Paine, was charged that yesterday ho stole a pair of white Loots, valued 10s. Gd. Chief Detective M'Mahon said that accused was a mail who had held a good position and had excellent references. He made up his mind to take a trip to th? Old Country, and he and his wife and child had mads all arrangements. They had taken tickcts and put their luggage aboard the Sydney boat. Accused yesterday morning went into a boot shop and asked to be shown some white boots. The salesman was called away to the telephone, and before he left the accused said to him: "I'll call again at two o'clock —have a pair of tens ready for mo!" The salesman came back to tind Pain© gone, and ho notiowt also that one of the boxes that had contained a pair of white boots was einpty. Information was given to the police, and Paine was arrested aboard the boat. Accused admitted the theft, and having nothing elso to say, was convicted and fined «£5, and 12s. co3ts.
