WAYLAID AND MAULED. THE ROAD ROBBER'S EFFORT. Auckland, August 5. Mr. and Mrs. Martinengo were waylaid and roughly handled at Onehunga last night. Mr. Martineugo is manager of a local picture theatre. His wife was carrying tho night's takings in a bag. She wan set upon by a powerfully-built man, and fell to tho ground, but stuck to her cashbag. and ecreomcd' for help, while her husband grappled with'the assailant. Her screams brought people, from adjacent houses, and the ruffian decamped without any plunder. Mrs. Martinengo was considerably bruised, and is suffering from bad nervous, shock. Mr. Mar tinengo has given tho police a full description of tho assailant.
THREE PREMISES BURNT. Christchurch, August 5. A draper's shop at Belfast, occupied by J. C. S«uics, was burned last night as well as tho adjoining house and bootmaker's shop owned by A. Wren, and occupied by J. Reece. Scanes's premises were insured for .£350, the furniture for ,£l5O, and the stock for .£520 in the State Office. It is understood Wren is not insured.
SETTLER SHOT AT. Dannovirke, August 5. A settler at Pukehinau, named Ireland, was wounded Inst night in the abdomen and hand b.v gunshot. A youth named Clemens is in custody at Pongaroa in connection with the affair. Ireland, it is alleged, says tho wounds wero indicted by Clemens. Tho latter declines to make a. statement. Later. Details regarding tho matter at Pukehinau are meagre. Ireland was brought to tho Dannevirko Hospital this afternoon, but his condition is not serious. Tho doctor extracted about 30 pellets from his hand.' It is alleged that the assailant fired two barrels into Ireland. The latter than ran. to a neighbour, who informed the police, and a constable went and found Clements and Mrs. Ireland locked in the house. Both wero arrested and remanded to appear at Palmerston next Monday,
