A return tearing upon t)io cost of tlifl Midland Railway to date, which wa! asked for by (lie late Sir Arthur Guimiess, was presented to Parliament yesterday, The, constructional work was given in three sections:'(a) From Bruimerton to Otira Tunnel; (b) from Springfield to Otira; ami (c) the Otira Tiumel. linuiimloii to Olira tunnel cost .£102,308. Of (Ids ,£203,86!) was expended by or on behalf «f the Midland Railway Company and- J3198.479 by tho New.Zealand Government.. Tho Springfield to Otira tunnel section cost .£736,743, of which .£61,579 was expended by or on behalf of tho Midland Railway Company and ifi7s,lM by tho Government. Thi eipemlituro/upon tlio Otira tunnel by tho New Zealand Government so far lmd been ■£257,551). The total value of land grants given to the Midland Railway Cbmpany was .£320,000.
