WOMAN'S SUFFRAGE IN THE U.S.
RECOMMENDATION OF SENATE COMMITTEE. American Suffragists aro in high feather over winning the. Senate Committee to recommend to tho Upper Chamber, as it did on Juno 19, an amendment to the constitution granting votes to women to be submitted to tho States for ratification. But the indications aro that they must rest on their laurels for some time to come. Tho issue is a long way from being squarely before Congress, and were it to oome to a vote now tho chances arc that tho resolution would fail.
The Committee's recommendation is, so far ag tlio sentunent of Congress can bo gleaned, principally significant as a symptom of the drift of opinion, and its effect might well to to precipitato the issuo to a vote next session of Congress. Before that stage is roached, however, Congress it is probable will set an investigation afoot to determine the advisability of endorsing a constitutional amendment to the effect that "the rights of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged on account of Bex."
Just now Congress is otherwise busy, icing occupied with tariff reform, and also faced with the task of, passing currency legislation to correct tlio ill-effects tliat tlio operation of lower duties may have on tlio country's fiscal system. -
