The Hon. Sir William John Lyne, K.C.M.G. (1903), was one of the best known figures in the publio life of Australia. He has hold'the Federal portfolios of Home Affairs, Trade and Customs, and .Treasurer. Before .the Commonwealth Constitution, Sir 'William was for several years Premier of New South Wales, which Assembly he entered in 1880 as'a representative of country Interests. By birth a Taanmnian, early in life he adventured into North Queensland, where his health gave way, and he was foroed to return home. Soon 'after, however, lie pioneered through Victoria into New South Wales, and obtained an interest in a station. This led him to Parliament. His first portfolio was that of Miniator Wtfrks; 'his '''next '''the Secretaryship for Lands, and then, after j i term in opposition, he attained the Premiership. "He .was commissioned to Torril, ,the first Commonwealth Ministry, but was not successful.' He became,' howjver,. Minister for Home Affairs, for Defence, and Customs, and finally was appointed. Treasurer. At the last Federal slections Sir William, although in bad health, was a candidate for tho Hume (eat, but was defeated.
