STORM IN OROUA COUNCIL.
AUDITOR-GENERAL'S LETTER,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) . • i, ~ Feilding, August 1. At the Oroua County Council meeting to-day the chairman, Hugh Burrell, lai3 on. the table a letter received 'from thq Auditor-General. The letter pointed out that the balance-sheet snowed that. ,£35 travelling allowance had- been paid to the chairman in lieu of the actual travelling expenses provided by the Act. The letter further'said: "This being tho- case, my duty is to call upon you to refund the amount of such allowance, and I shall be glad to consider any reasons which you may wish to submit why I should not tak® action accordingly."
Sir. Burrell said that when he received the letter lie sent a cheque immediately. He looked upon the letter as an insult. The matter raised a storm in the council, and the opinion was expressed that the chairman was quite entitled to receive the sum, and should not have returne l a cheque.
It was decided to ask Mr. Guthrie MjP.>_tojnquire into the position.
