Commenting on the balance-sheet of the National Bank'of New Zealand, just issued, the "Financial Times" says:—Tho excellent report published by the National Bank of New Zealand is the more noteworthy in that tho comparison was against exceptionally good figures. The gross profit for the twelve months ended March 31 amounted to £244,800, as' against N £222,200, and the not profit came to £135,500, as compared with £120,700. Last year the amount" placed to investment depreciation account was £10,000 -loss, tho other allocations being practically tho same. Tho carry forward has been increased by to a total of £36,7C0. According to tho bal-ance-sheet the deposits and current accounts are rather lower, being £4,229,400, against £4,357,900 at the corresponding date in '1912, but the increase in business done is reflected in bills discounted, which have gone up from £828,900 to £880,000, and in advances, which have risen from £3,202.800 to £3,356,700. The bank's available resources have just received an important addition from tho new issue of capital, which raises the paid-up capital from £5C0,0C0 to £750,0C0, and gives in addition £125,500 as share premiums. Tho latter amount has been placed to reserve, and brings that funds up to £645,000.

Clirlstchurch, August 1. j There is still no movement in grain, no offerings of any kind being made from tho country. Tho season .has been a record one for absence of business in the local trade, and there appears to be no immediate prospects of an improvement, wheat- is not likely to bo wanted until millers require to replenish their stocks There is no outlet for oats in Australia, and the North Island is apparently beine able to supply its own raiuirements more and more every year. The oat market is if anything weaker. The potato market has further weakened, and £2 ss. and £2 7s. 6d. at country stations is now being offered, and ?L- , r ,<l ua l>tity has changed hands at this latter figure. Inquiries made as to the prospect of a market in Sydney show that New Zealand potatoes would not be worth more than £5 there, and that would only mean about £2 at country stations. Ihe Sydney market is at present beina well supplied with white varieties of toes, and tho Melbourne market is much lower than Sydney.
