HANDSOME GIFT TO NELSON. (By Mcgraph—Press Affiroeiation.) Nelson, August 1. The City Council to-night received a letter from Mr. Cawthron, who is well known for his benefactions to tho city, stating that ho had acquired an area of 2500 acres on tho Dun Mountain line surrounding Wooded Peak, a mountain about four miles from tho city, which ho desired to present to tho council as trustees for tho people. The land embraces grand and beautiful scenery, and forms' ono of the finest natural parks in the Dominion. Thero aro already scenic and waterworks reserves adjoining, which, with Sir. Cawthron's gift, wakes a total reservation of about 7500 acres.
Tho council adopted a resolution, expressing its high appreciation of Mr. Cawthron's generosity, and decided to iiamo the area Cawthron Park.
Tho Solar Physics Observatory, which Mr. Cawthron hns offered to erect, equip, and endow, will probably be situated in or near tho park.
[Mr. C-awthron's benefactions to Nelson aro already numerous. Ho recently presented the city with a fine flight of granite steps up the Church Hill, costing some thousands of pounds, an organ (,£2500) to the School of Music, and about a mile of ornamental chains and_ standards along tho Rocks Road Esplanade. The Solar Observatory, to be established in Nelson, for which Mr. Cnwthron will provido the whole of the funds, is estimated to cost £12,000.1
