COUNCIL OF AGRICULTURE:
NEW BODY FORMED,
CONSTITUTION & OBJECTS,
'A Dominion Council of Agriculture has been formed by the Conference of Agricultural Societies which is now sitting in Wellington.
On Wednesday the conference resolved: "That for the purpose of organising persons engaged in the agricultural and pastoral industries in Kew Zealand, it is necessary that a Chamber of Agriculture should be formed, and that such Chamber, should consist of (by having affiliated to it) all associations or bodies which aro. concerned or interested iu such industries." Then a committee was appointed to go further into the proposal and report to the conference. At yesterday's sitting the committee reported as follows:— Name.—That the name bo "The Dominion Council of Agriculture." Objects.—The special objects of this council shall be: To promote the interests of agricultural and rural life by securing the co-operation and federation of the various organisations which are working for rural better-
ment and agricultural advancement. Provided that this council shall not interfere with the autonomy and freedom of action of any organisation that federates with it. Membership.— I The council shall consist of delegates from any jCe«" Zealand organisation devoted' to tho interests of settlers engaged iu rural industries that adheres to this constitution and pays tho prescribed levy. Eepresentntion.—Each association shall be entitled to elect delegates on the following basis: 400 members or under, one; over 400 and under 800 members, 2; over SOO and under 1206 members, i)| over J2OO members, 4. The levy 1o defray expenses shall be ■£2 for each delegate the societies aro entitled, to send to the meeting of tho council. Executive.—The Executive of tho
Dominion Council of Agriculture should consist of president, secretary, treasurer, who shall be elected by the annual conference, and six members from each island, three members ,of the executive from each island, to retire cach year, such members to bo eligible for re-election. The members of the executive representing the North Island to be elected by tho Norlh Island delegates of the council; , and the members of the executive representing the South Island to bo elected by tho South Island delegates of the council. . It is also provided that the extraordinary vacancies on the executive, to be filled by the executive; that the general meeting of tho council be held annually in Wellington; the executive of tho council to meet at least once in six months; and that rules and regulations shall be drawn up by the executive of the council on the lines of the English Chamber of Agriculture, where applicable.
Ml". J. G. Wilson mentioned that it had been suggested at the meeting of the committee that if possible meetings might bo called for November at Chrislchurch, and June at Palnierslon Norlh.
The conference elected the following as the fir.-jt executive:—
North Island: Ifc'srs. A. Conway (Miinawntu), J. G. Hutherford (Auckland), W. Perry (Masterton), B. C. Ljvaght (Egmont), A. 11. Russell (Hawkc's Bay), and J, G. Wilson (Bulls). South Island: Me«srs. ,T. D. Hall and D. D. Mflicfarln.il? (Canterbury). A. S. Orbell (Otago), W. D. limit'(Southland), John Studholme (Ashbiirtoii) and 11. D. Vavasour (.WarlbovaughU- . Miv Vavasrtur was not present at the conference, and if he is unwilling or unable to act on the executive Mr. Witholl. of South Canterbury will be appointed.
