EXEMPTION TJEGED. Exemption from rates for agricultural showgrounds is. again being advocated. Yesterday, on the motion of Mr. J. S. Connott (Toranaki), the Agricultural Societies Conference resolved that all agricultural showgrounds in a borough or a county should ho exempt from rates. Speakers claimed that agricultural societies were educational institutions.

The propevtv, which is about H miles from Otaki railway staition, attracted' a large number of buyers. Tho property has been carefully subdivided, and cut up into con-veniently-sized sections, ranging from 1 to 127 acres. Bidding at auction was dull, and only threo sections were disjwsed of under the hammer. After tho tale a much keener inquiry set in, anil nt the end of tho day seven sections found nlew owners. Keen inquiry is said to bo at ill coming in for quite a number of the pa.?sed-in lot?, especially in regard to the swamp land.
