WAIRARAPA EAST.
GEOLOGICAL SURVEY TO BE MADE. The Hon. W. Fraser (Minister for Public Works and Mines) has directed Mr. Morgan, tho head of the Geological Department, to visit and report upon the geology of Wairarapa North, to tho east of a line drawn from Masterton along tho I'uketoi Range to Dannevirke. He will visit various coal outcrops, and tho natural gas springs, and tho oil-bearing rocks, and tho oil bores at Maugaone and Weber. In view of tho mineral possibilities of this area, this visit should prove of great importance. A knowledge of the district is of the utmost value beforo tho exnet route of tho East Coast railway is finally determined on.
At tho well being bored for oil in North Puketoi natural gas, caught from a natural gas spring, is burnt, and helps to drive tho oil-uoring machinery. It constitutes 75 per cent-, of tho fuel used, and is, of course, a valuable economy.
