DEFINITELY SUSPENDED.
AUCKLAND LOSES P. AND 0. SERVICE. (By Telegraph—Pmss Association.) . , Auckland, July 30. , r A cabled reply iraa received tp-day by Mr, \Y. S. Gunsoii from the chairman of directors of tho P. and.O. Company definitely stating that the suspension of tho direct servico with Auckland had been decided upon. Tho reply was as follows : —"Wo have decided reluctantly to suspend our direct connection with Auckland for tho present because of its drawbacks to our Australian work." In response to this cablegram, Mr. Gunson dispatched the following raessago to the chairman of the P.. and 0. Company, London.: —"Tho decision occasions deep general regret, and is looked upon as a distinot loss to the Dominion. We quite understand the drawback to vour Australian work, but yet trust that some rearrangement can be made, and, for reasons urged in ray previous message, beg you to reconsider and see your way clear to renew tho service. Present and future prospects fully warrant the continuance of the ecirvice." Mr. Gunsm made a suggestion that the Ohambor of Commerce should call a meeting specially to urge upon the company the importance of resuming its New Zealand service, with Auckland as a port of call. This suggestion was placed before Mr. Nathan (president of the Chamber of Commerce), and he stated that, as thero was no immediate urgency, he : would bring the matter up a,t tlho next meeting of tho chamber.
