A FIGURE IN OIL.
Any mention of the Tarannki oil fields at the present juncture would be incomplete without referenco to tho liamo of Mr. Ritter Von I'edorowicz, tho Austrian expert, in whose knowledge of drilling all interested appear to have tlio greatest confidence. Mr. Fedorowiez has had mi extended experience on tho Galician oil fields, and to that experience lie has added a study of the technical part of tho industry. Mr. Fedorowiez favours tho Galician method of percussion drilling, as against tho rotary process, which is reallv a method of digging by tho sheer force of a very weighty drill, jolted up and down by thevscesaw action of a hu,go beam, to which tho drill-pole is attached by means of a heavy cable. Whilst he says nothing against the rotary method of drilling, and knows of its success in America, he believes the percussion drill is less liable to delay through accident, and lends itself to tho making of a clean dry bore. Mr. Fedorowiez is supervising the boring operations of tho Blenheim and Phoenix liores, which are mainly supported by Blenheim and Christchurch capital, respectively. .
