The Legislative Council sat at 2.30 p.m. , The Hon. W. G'. F. Carncross took tlirf chair in the absence of Mr. Speaker, FIRE WASTE. Tho Hon. J. DUTHIE asked tho Government whether, iu view of the 122 lires recorded in New Zealand du'ring April last, and the regrettable excessive number usually occurring, they will cause a coroner's, inquiry to bo held into tho circumstances of nil futuro iires; further, recognising that -this. abnormal excess of lires is suggestive of incendiarism, will tho coroner' be instructed to call upon the underwriters interested tor evidence as to the value of the risk in question which they held covered. The Hon. 11. I). BELL said the question had for some time been under tho consideration of the Government. Thero wero several difficulties in. tho W(iy ot adopting the suggestion, the primary ono being that of expense. If the Government did decide upon this course they would inform both Houses of their decision.
