5 —_ JOTTINGS FROM ALL SOURCES i OTAKI. Mr. and Mrs. ]!oss Cooper, old. and respected residents of this district, leave shortly for To Awamntu, where Mr. Cooper hag purchased u farm. It is reported that Mr. Ross has disposed of his hotel at Manakau. ' There is every prospect of an early sprint'. Though only a month from the shortest day, of late we have had many glorious, mild, sunshiny days that liavo had a wonderful effect oil nature—buds are bursting forth in every direction. Already cherry plums, almonds, and other early-flowering fruit trees are clothed in blossoms, while the hearts of the farmers have been gladdened by the excellent growth of grass during the past week or two. Tho same tiling appears to apply to other parts of the Dominion. Wo are informed that in Canterbury the-spring is the earliest for years.: In favoured spots in that province early peaches, etc., liavo been in full bloom for a week or two, and the exceptional mildness lias teen conducive to a. splendid growth of feed. It not; infrequently happens that these exceptionally early springs are followed by cold and wintry weather when' the spring proper should be here,, and wo should bo prepared in case : this ohould occur again, this year. Tho rush for. vaccination'in- Otaki.and district, though not so pronounced as a week or two ago, still continues, and Br. Hutliwaite, Nurso Lewis, and Mr. A. S. Dunn aro still haying a most strenuous time. Tire bulk of the Native population must liavo now been dealt witn. 1 Up to Saturday morning Dr. Hutliwaite had vaccinated upwards of 700 people in Otaki and district. Quito a number of those operated upon failed to "take," the reason for this generally being thought to be that the lymph sent out had been diluted too freely, consequent on the great demand in all directions. WANGANUI. A number of Wanganui dairymen and milk suppliers met on Saturday evening, when it was decided to form an association, principally for the purpose of maintaining a. standard prico for inilk throughout tho year. This step, it is understood, has been taken as a matter of mutual protection, it being pointed out that tlie securing of a reasonable price in the spring affords tho only means of compensating for the losses sustained by dairymen during the winter season. Tho death occurred on Sunday, at his residence, Durio Hill, of Mr. William Bcdwell, at the age of 54 years. Deceased Ca-mbs., England, and came to Wanganui in 1877, at the age of 18 years, lor some years he was clerk to the late Air.
