-9 AN INTERESTING CEREMONY. •Tho Duchess of Buckingham and' Chmdos, to the accompaniment of tho signs and gestures of the deaf-and-dumb alphabet, laid at Stoke Newinston recently the lueinoriat slono of the Institute of St. John of Beverley for the Deaf and Dumb of North London. Deaf-mutes took part in tho prayers and the hymns, and followed tlie addresses by watching the motions of the hands and mouth of the Rev. F. W. Oilb.v, chaplain to the Royal Association in Aid of the Deaf and Dumb. A deaf-and-dumb baronet, Sir Arthur Fairbairn, by gestures proposed a voto of thanks to the duchess. Quoting the lines Silence betrays more woe Than words, though ne'er so witty, A be.?!»ar that is dumb, you know, May challenge double pity, he said: "It is as. a beggar I challenge your pity and appeal for Jurther subscriptions to this institute." Tlie new institute, called after St. John of Beverley because ho is said (o have honied a man by teaching him speech, will have a lceture-hall, a billiards-room, a kitchen, and a Dorcas room. For the completion of the building X'ISOO is still needed.
