EAST COAST NOTES.
Recent advico from the East Coast states that - a very fine spring is being experienced in that quarter. Stock oi all kinds are said to be doing well with a good demand for anything ready for marketing. Hoggets for forward delivery are changing hands at 13s. for delivery in November. There is good inquiry from Hawke's Bay for dairy cows in calf which are selling "from J!5 ss. Work such as scrub-cutting, _ bush-fell-ing, ploughing, and road making is reported to bo plentiful, still, there are a good many "swaggers" calling for rations at tho larger stations. During ono week lately no fewer than cighty-iivo men, most of them young Active, fellows, called at ono homestead for provisions. These men art) described as representing all nationalities, while quite a number of them . aro tradesmen. The old time "sundowner," who was such a familiar figure in the past, seems to have almost disappeared. Tho majority of the men now looking for work are only fit for scrulv cutting, for which tlicy receive from Bs. to 10s. per day, less 14s. per week for their keep.
