NEW RAILWAY ENGINES.
LEVEL CROSSING SIGNALS.
(By Mseraph.—Prois Asßooiatlon.l Christchurch, July 26. A railway official speaking to a reporter to-day said that there was. a tremendous press of work in all the Government workshops at the present time. Big 00-ton locomotives are being constructed at the Addington shops which, when finished, would be sent up to tho Tai&ape-Taumaru-nui section of the Main Trunk line, and eieht 45-ton bank engines have also been constructed for tho north, and smoo April i they hare been going away at the rate of one a month. Trucks are also being made in large quantities, the sizes beang 8 and 12-ton, 4-wheeled wagone, and 30-ton bogie trucks, and this should relieve this usual shortage. . . Referring to the level-orossing danger, the railwayman states that in all probability the Department will seriously coneider the erecting of automaticallyoperated warning bells at oil such dangerous places, but it is doubtful if each, action mil be taken until an Act of Parliament has been passed which will exonerate the Railway Department fromi any liability for damages should accidents arise through warning devices: failing to o/'f for anv reason. It will not be. long now before passenger petrol locomotives should arrive m the Dominion. These locomoi.ives, which with their carriage are all 6elf-contained, are intended for use upon branch lines wheie traffic hardly warrants the incurring of the fcipense of Tunning an ordinary train. On what particular, lines the new type of etwine will be run has not yet.been decided, and will probably not be known until tho new General Manager has investigated the whole matter.
