NOTES AND COMMENTS. IB; GLINUOI.] The annual steeplechase meeting of the Woodlands Hunt Club will bo held on tho Pahiatua racecourse on Wednesday. Mr. D. W. Gibson, who lias resigned his appointment as a stipendiary steward, will leave Christcliurch on his return to Australia at the end of next month. Tho stallion Togos, by Seaton Delaval— Leocant, was sold in Melbourne this month for 30 guineas. At a rocont sale in Melbourne, three nuires in foal to .Vasco were sold for 30 guineas, and another for 5 guineas. Napper Tandy, whoso special mission will be the Enfield Steeplechaso (two miles), was shipped south on Thursday evening. Tho Auckland gelding is a good jumper, and goes two miles well, but beyond that ho is not much good. In answer to "J.8.1C.": A win for Bercola or The Native in the Grand National Steeplechase would not entail a penalty for the National' Hurdles. The Manawatu Cup next season will bo worth .£7OO. Los Angelos is being given schooling lessons over tho small fences at Porirua, but, so far, he has not shown any partiality for the business, and, in his second essay, ho had a fall. Neireno (Martian—Cuiralba) las been leased to a sportsman, and has joined J. Peachey's team.

The Fordell trainer F. Tilley has won no fewer than thirty-two races this season, and, with the exception of tho win of Equitas in the Champion Plate, the whole of them have been won since Christmas. Enroco hurt his knee while contesting tho Final Hurdles at Trentham, and will require a spell. Wimmera's win in tho Doutta Galhi Hurdles at the V.R.C. Grand National meeting credited Mr. E. J. Watt witli Tho Riecarton horseman, C. Emerson, continues to meet with success in Now South Wales. At tho Clarence River meeting on July 18 and 17 he won tho principal event on tho first day, tho Club Handicap, on Pyrus, and on the second day rodo the same horse to victory in the Filial Handicap. An English sportsman, Air. H. S. Goodson, laid iGOO to ,£3OO cash against Craganour in the recent Derby, and handed tho ,£3OO over to the backer before it was known that Craganour had been objected to by tho stewards and subsequently disqualified. Mr. Goodson has had the money restored to him since, and, by way of marking his appreciation of the action of the layer, gavo .£IOO back as "luck penny," says tne "London Sportsman." An honest settlement on the ono side, and a pretty and substantial acknowledgment on the other. At tho Newbury races (England) last month, the Australian jockey F. Wootton rode Longtown to victory in the Berkshire Foal Stakes, of ,£B3B, for two-year-olds. Longtown is a son of Sundridge from Lady town, and cost his owner, Mr. E. Hulton, a patron of R. Wootton's stable, 3100 guineas as a yearling. He was bred at the famous Slcdmere Stud by the late Sir Tatton Sykes. At Epsom on Oaks day young Wootton was also successful on' Blue Stone in the Effingham Plate. ■ As the audience dispersed, the young men upstairs lined the front of the gallery and sang a verse of "Rule Britannia." Tlioy followed this up by singing the National Anthem. From Southland comes news- that Soldiers' Chorus is looking well and ready to undergo a preparation for the Now Zealand Cup.

In connoction with Phroso's withdrawal from tho C.J.C. Winter Cup, it is interesting to note that tho Australian-bred maro WA9 on Friday entered for tiro sixfurlong races at the IJiccartou meeting. A largo number of horses were exeroisod at Hiccarton on Saturday morning, but,.as no suitable track was available, trainers. .wore unable to _ indulge their charges in fast work. Chief Justice (E. Murfitt) and Apple Pie (T. O'Connor) .were given a schooling task over tho big oouritry. At the post and rftils tho latter came down, giving his rider a nastylooking fall, but no serious injuries wcro received. Combination jumped tho hurdles in good style, but N'orth-East ran off when galloping with Red Earl. At his second attempt, however, the diestnut gelding showed himself to bo a very bold jumper, and sot over the obstacles at a good pace.—'"Evening News." Weights for minor events on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting will bo declared on Friday next.
