AUCTIONEERS' RESENTMENT. Auckland, July 25, At the annual meeting of the Land Agents and Auctioneers' Association, Mr. Lwington (estate agent) remarked upon the number of auctioneers on tho membership list. He said that ho had been, told that the auctioneers intended to swamp the land agents in the election of a committee. This was warmly resented by a number of auctioneers, who gave an emphatic denial to tho insinuation, and declined to stand for election unless tho remark was withdrawn. Mr. Ewington declined to withdraw, but accepted tho denial made- by individual members, saying that his statement was made on good authority.. Tho ballot then proceeded without the names of the protesting auctioneers. LABOUR CONGRESS SPLIT. ' RAILWAY MEN APPKOVE IT. Oamaru, July 25. Tho Oamaru Branch of the A.S.E.S. passed a resolution: "That tho Oamaru Branch has every confidence in tho ability of the executive-to conduct all tho business entrusted to it in the best possiblo manner in tho interests of members generally, and especially approves its recent action in withdrawing i'roin tho late Labour Congress in Wellington when, in their judgment the executive saw it would be detrimental to tho best interests of the Department and members to v remain." .
WAIROA WANTS SMALL FARMS. Wairoa, July 25. A proposal to close the local dairy factory owing to the scarcity of suppliers was unanimously rejected nt a meeting here. A motion was carried that the Minister for Lands and Nativo Affairs bo asked to provide small farms for tho Wairoa district, and that delegates from the Counties' Conference at Wellington be asked to support the same. A further motion was carried: "That the people of tho district consider it the duty of the Government to do something in. the. direction of securing land for small farms, only one estate having been, taken for close settlement; that this part of tho country has been n6glected in the past, and, to prevent the closing down of two struggling factories, immediate steps are necessary, and tho Government be asked to advertise for offers suitablo for land for closer settlement. It was further resolved that this resolution bo telegraphed to tho Premier."
HIS WIFE & HIS ASSETS. Hamilton, July 2i. A meeting of creditors in the estate of Alfred Crossby, settler, Rotorua, was held at Hamilton. The liabilities wero sliown at ,£4OO and assets nil. It wu*. stated that bankrupt (under the naino of Oossley) filed at Wellington 15 years ago, and tho Assignee stated that bankrupt had been convicted 17 times of various charges. Bankrupt said all his property belonged to his wife, and Oio was only the • acting-manager. It was decided to prosecute the man under tho penal clauses of tho Act. It was considered that it is a' growing opinion that commercial houses ■ could bo defrauded with impunity, and this should be ended. Tho wifo consented to file within a fortnight. BEST IN DAY AND CONTRACT LABOUR. Timarp, July .25.. The Harbour Board havo -undertaken to extend tho eastern rubble mole by 500 feet by day work, and to-day appointed Mr. M. F. Slowey foreman, at a salary of ,£8 a week, plus 28 per cent, of any saving effected on tho Engineer's estimate. The chairman held that this arrangement combines what is best jn tho day labour and contract systems. Two members objected, one because they were forming a new precedent. The chairman admitted thig, but said that tho precedent ,was a very good one. SALOON,& HOUSE BURNT. , Gisborne, July 25. A billiard saloon at Te Karaka, "owned by M'Mahon and occupied by Heffernan, was destroyed by lire; also the adjoining dwelling, occupied by Hanley, baker. Tke building occupied by tho Bank of New Zealand was'jmlled down to prevent the flames spreading to the hotel. TIMARU HARBOUR FINANCE.' Timaru, July 25. The Harbour Board' have to renew or pay off tho .£IOO,OOO loan (London) cf 1883, and are arranging to raise it locally at 5 per cent, for 1G years without expense. They would have had to pay 5 per cent, in London, and about .£SOOO for raising the loan. About half tho amount is already booked without advertising, and tho . Finance Committee i 9 highly pleased.
THE BAND JUDGE. Christchurch, July 24. The executive of the South Island Band Association has appointed Mr. E. Sutton, of Glasgow, judge of the Invercargill contest. Mr. Sutton will judge the ]3allarat contest. CONSTABLE SHOT IN ARM. Christchurch, July 25. Constable Carney, of Lyttelton, while arresting, a man to-night, was shot in the left arm. He was taken to tho .hospital at Christchurch, where it was found that a bullet was embedded in tho arm. , brief Mention. Timaru, July2s. Tho earnings for the port of Timaru for tho first six months of the year are .£I3OO over the same period last year, ani a record for a half-year. Blenheim, July 25. At the Marlborough poultry slow, New Zealand championships were secured by R. Wanden for silver wynndottes and white wyandottea; H. .T. Bright, old English black-red game class; antU-E. Sowman working homer pigeons..' Nine championships vera available, but though competition generally was extensive, only four were awarded, the remainder being blocked by the rule requiring three <lis-' tinct exhibitions in each group. At a largely-attended special general meeting of members of the New Zealand Commercial Travellers' and 'Warehousemen's Association, held hero to-night, it was unanimously decided to join toe New Zealand Federated Association.
