THE WORKEBS BUSY. In addition to the groups already taken up for tho forthcoming pageant and carnival) the following are either partly 'or wholly arranged for;—Tho early settlement of Port Nicholson, by the Early Settlers' Association. Florence Nightingale at tho Crimean War. Tho Landing of St. Augustine; his interview with King Ethellert and Queen Bertha. King Eobert tho Bruce and his followers at Bannockburn. Edward IV visiting Caxton's Printing Press at Westminster. Translators presenting the Bible to James I
At the last meeting of the committee it was decided to have, in addition to the historical pageant, national groups representing the various units of the British Empire. Sdmo of these have already been taken up, and an effort is being nmdo to liavo each part of the Empiro represented. Messrs. Bethune and Co. have kindly granted the use of an office above their auction rooms for Mr. Silver, the pageant master. Both he arid tho institute director, Mr. J. Bennet, have taken up their quarters there, so as to be at close call. Matters in connection with the bazaar which is to be held in tho Town Hall after the pageant is concluded are said to be progressing most satisfactorily. At tho last meeting over seventy were present. Up to the present twonty-four stalls have been organised. It is honed to bring the number ultimately up td' thirty. Great enthusiasm is being manifested by the ladies, who have nlready organised various gift toas and other entertainments to swell the takings of their stalls, or provide material for sewing bees being held regularly. This afternoon the handkerchief and d'oyloy stair hold a reception at , Messrs. liegg's rooms, Manners Street, while for next Wednesday an afternoon gift-tea has teen arranged by tho workers connected withj the plain and fancy stall. St. John's Schoolroom has been engaged, and, her Excellency tho Countess of Liverpool has signified her intention of being present. Miss RodgeTs (caro Messrs. Kirkcaldie and Stains) is in charge of the jumble sales, th« first of which will be held in the Boys' Institute building on August 20. A Ml meeting of the Pageant Committee will be held in the Mayor's room, Town Hall, on Monday.
