The Hastings-bred Wanstead (Turquoise—Last Chance) was a winner at the ISroken Hill meeting early this month. This horse was not very, convincing when racing in this country, but.he has won ncveral races for the ex-hurdle horseman, Harry Moore, now domiciled in Adelaide. . Master Paul (St. Paul-Mermaid) had Ins initial race in Victoria at the Sandown Park meeting on July IC, when he fudshed out of a place in the steeplechase of two miles and a quarter.. , It is E"aid, that the V.R.C. stipendiary stewards recently had "a few words 1 ' with Jockey Joe O'Conuell, regarding the frequency with which Ms mounts in steeplechases'ran off. Tho New Zealand-owned Julian was made a short-priced favourite in the Jumpers' Flat Handicap (one mile and a quarter) at Sandown Park (Victoria) on July 16, but ho was beafcon into third place.. The race went to Monody, a good three-year-old, with Belfast in second place. ,v; Lace: Collar ■■(MenschikofF—Castorla'ce) "is in foal to Gold Crest, and visits that sire again. As F. Stenning could not spare time to go to Riccarton, tfhe Auckland niaro Sphinx was taken south in charge of J. Williamson. Jockey S. J. Reid, who has riding engngarncuts at the Eiccarton meeting, went south last evening by tlio Wahine. The AVairarapa horseman has mounts in all the flat events. The jumpers, Waitarere, Waione, and Pawa, have been sent home to Levin, and are not to be raced again this season. J. 11. Prosser is taking four horsss to the Riccarton meeting, viz., Styx, Parky, The Native, and Fireworks. The two first-named will b9 ridden by H. Telford, and tho other pair by H. M'Sweeney. Eobinson, the trainer of Craganour, is a. philosopher. On learning of the disqualification of the favourite, he remarked : "Well, I am not an old man yet, and may still live to train a Derby winner." Amongst the steeplechase horses likely to visit Sydney at the close of the National meeting are Hautere, The Native, and Fireworks. Amongst tihe winners at Sandown Park (Victoria)'- on July 16 was the three-year-old filly Omega (St. Ambrose—Neva), who scored in the second heat of the Third Division Handicap. Omega is a halfsister to' the Derby wiuner Danube, and cost 'JOOjjns. when purchased by tho medical gentleman who races as "Mr. S. A. Kawdon." Her dam, Neva, is by Stepniak from "Whirlpool, by St. George from Watersprite, by Traducer from Waterwitch, by Camden from JSlermaid (imp.) by King Tom. The annual report of the Wairarapa llacmg Club for tho twelve months ending on July 31 states that the year commenced witn a debit balanco on the working account of £'305 19s. 3d., and at the date mentioned the bank overdraft will be .£625 12s. llkl. Improvements to the value of JJI3-1-1 ss. 7d. navo been carried out during the period referred to, and the stakes paid snow an increase of on those ot the previous year.
