GREY ELECTION.
ANALYSIS OF THE VOTING. (By Telegrarjh.—STiccial Correspondent.) Hokitika, July 25. This morning's "West Coast Times," discussing tho polling at tho Grey byelection, says: "An analysis of tho voting recorded yesterday -in tho second ballot for tho Grey election is most interesting and instructive. In his speech last night Mr. Webb referred to tho support accorded him in Greymouth, but tho electors of Grey mouth and suburbs gtivo Mr. Michel a fairly large majority over Mr. Webb, the figures showing:—Greymouth and Suburbs: Michel, 1820; Webb, 1542. This demonstrates pretty clearly that despite tho desperate efforts of the 'Red Fed'-Liberal coalition, the Reform candidate's platform of sound finance and moderate progress, appealed to tho business people, and the reasonable workers. Of course, it should be remembered that a large number of 'R-ed Feds.' would vote at Greymouth, so that Mr. Michel's triumph in Greymouth is most satisfying. He also got a majority at Re-efton, and there again was a large TJod Fed." vote cast, according to the figures. Mr. Webb, carrying as ho did, the support of the IJed Fed-'-quasi-Libei'al alliance, won by 580 votes, 'llie figures also show that, except for the hot-beds of.the 'Red Fed.' organisation, Mr. Webb was beaten. He came away from the leading mining districts where revolutionary Socialism and 'mobocracy' are preached witkj a decisivo majority of 956, and this -was decreased by nearly 400 in tho other parts. The voting is interesting. It serves to domonistrate that the Reform Government's work at Waihi has engendered tho embittered opposition of tbe Red JFoderationiste, but it also shows that tho rational people in other parts of tho Grey electorate applaud the Government action at Waihi. This augura well for other parts of the country where there is no preponderance of the federationists. The voting at tho mining centres was:— Runanga : Michel, 41; Webb, 425. Blackball: Michel, 75; Webb, 40G. Blackwatcr: Michel, 14; Webb, 59. Dunolie: Michel, 51; Webb, 127. Bsvrrytown: Michel, 8; Wobb, 39. Globs Hill: Michel, 19; Webb, U. Tnylorville: Michel, D 9; Webb, 81. Smaller mining centres:— Michel, 99; Wobb, 208. Totals: Michel, 406; Webb, 956. These figures are most interesting, and jmist be most disconcerting to the so-called "Liberals." They provo conclusively that (except for tho district whero extreme Labour and Socialists hold the fort) the Reform Government stands in better favour than the combined "Liberal"- and "Bed Fed." parties, and they also show that, in tho second ballot, when Mr. Hannan's supporters were implored to chooso between the new Red Liberal nlliance and Reform, less than two hundred responded to the invitation, and the balance of Mr. Hannan's votes in those places preferred Reform to strife and Syndicalism. Tho voting yesterday demonstrates, beyond all doubt, that where Socialism and mob rulo are preached, the Reform Government's policy is unpopular. It is only natural, and we are very glad that it is so. A policy that would please tho "Red Federation would bo tho ruination of tho country, and would spell shipwreck for any party. On the other hand, whero tho disciples of mob rule and tho general strike doctrine aro not in evidence, the Reform party commands more substantial support than do tho other two parts put together.
