THE LEAGUE GAME.
MATCH ATTEACTIONS TO-DAY. A knock-out competition will be commenced to-day, and the League authorities state that a great gamo should be witnessed at Newtown Park between the winners of the M'Guire Cup (Newtown) and the runners-up (Petone). The League note adds that Newtown have beaten Petone on threo occasions, but the players from tho suburbs are confident that they will "get their own back" to-day. Both teams are in the best of condition. Tho admission to the Park is free, and the game starts at 3 p.m. At tho Hutt the local team will play Athletic. Athletic are reputed to be tho strongest team now playing, containing as it dees such players as Kelly (considered by tho N.S.W. critics to be one of tho finest five-eighths seen in Australia for many Bradiey also is a much improved player, and the exhibition of "League" will probably be worth watching. Tho Leaguo authorities point out that tho selectors will bo watching these games with a view to selecting tho Wellington representative team to lour north, and also play Canterbury on August 16, and that this will have the effect of making the players "put their best foot forward."
