RUGBY. MAOEIS AT TIMARU. (By Telegraph—Press AFsociatton.) Timaru, July 24. The Maoris (19) beat South Canterbury (8) at Timaru to-day. Tho home team were playing their first representative match, and had not played together before. They lacked tho combination in which the 'Maoris were well practised. There was much interest in the match, 3000 people being present. RATHER NOTABLE MATCH. Timaru, July 21. In tho Higli Schools' match Timaru v. Waitaki, the former won against a heavier team by 12 points to S. The result is notable, as Timaru had not scored at all against Waitaki in eleven annual matchcs. SIXTH GRADE EVENT. ATHLETICS. FINANCE OF THE AMERICANS. A meeting of thc.AYellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last evening, Mr. R. W. M'Villy . presiding. The resignation from the centre of Mr. W. H. Pollock was received with _jegret. Mr. E. A. Dawson wrote resigning liis position as the centre's delegate on ; the Sports Federation. Mr. C. T. Young was npnointed to tho vacancy. _ > In connection with the visit of the American team of athletes, a circular letter was received from the council of tiio N.Z.A.A.A. Tho circular mentioned that the total expense to land the team in New Zealand (including return fares via Australia) would be about .£7OO, of which Australia is expected to contribute one-half, the other half being contributed in tho Dominion. The council's request that tho centre contribute the sum of JCCO towards tho expenses was acceded to. Mr. G. Scott resigned his position as secretary fi the centre, owing to his removal to Timaru. Mr. 0. T. Young was appointed tho new secretary.

LACROSSE. THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The Management Committee of the Wellington Lacrosse Association met last evening, Mr. A. H. Casey presiding over a full attendance of delegates. The date for tho representative match against Auckland, to be pi a veil at the Basin Reserve, was fixed for Saturday, August 10. Correspondence was received intimating that tho Neiv South Wales Lacrosse Association could not send a team to tou.r New Zealand this season, but that a visit could be expected during the l'Jl-l season. Jlr. Casey reported that the New Zealand Association had extended an invitation to the Victoria (British Columbia) Lacrosse Club to play matches at Wellington and Auckland if the proposed tour in Australia eventuates. The four club captains (Messrs. li. Renkin, A. 11. Casey, S. Jlulton, and F. Loo), with Mr. I'. J. M'Govern were appointed a Selection Committee to select the representative team to play against Auckland. It was decided to hold trial representative matches on July 2(1 and August 2 and 9, the match for to-morrow afternoon at the Basin Reserve to be between teams representing the best attack and Hie next best .defence against the best defence and the next best attack. In connection with the appointment oi the referees for the Auckland-Wellington match, it was decided to submit to the Auckland Association the names of Messrs. W. 11. Benson (of Christchurch) and A. C. Jantke and P. J. M'Govern (of Wellington).
