A heresy Sunt.
AT THE METHODIST CONFERENCE. By Telegraph—ProEs Association—Copyricht (Ecc. July 23, 0.30 a.m.) London, July 22. Something in the nature of-a heresy— hunt has occupied tho Wesleyan Conference over the Itcv. George J tickson's appointment as tutor ,in l'astoral . Theology at Didsbury College. Mr, Jackson, in IUOS, as head of (ho Methodist College at Toronto, became embroiled in a controversy with tho:older ; school of thought, and his appointment to Didsbury College was questioned on the ground that his views regarding the • Old Testament wore'contrary to Methodist teaching. Mr. Jackson enunciated his views in a courso of lectures in 1909, wherein ho expressed the opinion that Moses did not wrilo tho Pentateuch, and • that Genesis was not a trustworthy account of the beginnings of human life and civilisation, or that the Boole of Jonah was a sober record of plain, fact. Dr. Coley moved that, in view of the I unrest caused by the lectures/ the ' nppointment to Didsbury College be considered. Ho said that while Mr. Jackson was no believer in what was'called tho ; New Theology, he appeared to hold that ,a minister could go as far as the Rev. It. J. Campbell, or, further, without beiuf amenable to an ecclesiastical tribunal.
Mr. Jackson in his defenco 6tated that, however it might be with somo of th< older men in tho ministry, nine-tenths oi tho youngor men found little that was new and nothing disturbing in tlio lectures. ' Tho conference, with seven dissentients, carried an amendment to the effect that it did not sco any reason to interfere with the appointment.
