BARRY WINS EASILY

SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP. PADDLES HOME TWO LENGTHS AHEAD. FINISH A PROCESSION. PEARCE'S PLUCKY EFFORT. By TeleiraDh—rreas Association—CoDyrleb' London, July 21. The race for the sculling championship of tho world, the English and Welsh championships, tho new "Sportsman's" Cup, and JCSOO a side, between Ernest Barry (tho holder) and Harry Pearce (of New South Wales, and ex-cliampion of Australia) was rowed to-day ou the Thames championship course, from Putney to lUortlalcc (4 miles 410 yards). Barry won easily by two lengths. The lowing path was crowded, and the conditions wero ideal, with a slight breeze off Middlesex shore, but it raised only a faint ripple on the water, which was running at a fair rate. There was rough water to Putney, a leading wind and smooth water from Hammersmith Bridge to Barnes Bridge, and choppy water in the last stages.

Both men wero heartily cheered on going to the stake boat. They were in firstrate condition. Pearce gained a little advantage by winning tho toss. He chose the Surrey side, and led at tho start, striking 38. For tho first few minutes he averaged .12 strokes to the minute and Barry 30. Pearce, rowing deep, led by a length and a quarter at Craven Steps. Barry, at his 1 eighth stroke, nearly lost a scull. When he recovered himself he rowed with machine-like regularity. Pearce had gained a quarter of a length at the mile post. It was a fine race to Harrod's, where Barry gradually crept up and shot Hammersmith Bridge half a length ahead. Pearce then became distressed and lost form. Ho used his arms too much, while Barry was steady and his rowing rhythmical. The champion then took his opponent's water, and was two lengths ahead at 'Thorneycroft's, and three at Chiswick Eyot. Thence the race was a procession. Barry slowed down, and paddled homo. Pearce rowed pluckily, but was no match for Barry. He never ceased to persevere, and his brave effort was loudly clieered. > The time was 24min. 9 2-ss«c. The crowd wlr'ch witnessed tho race was considerably larger than that' at tho Barry-Arnst contest. PRESS COMMENT ON THE RACE.

"A TRIUMPH FOR THE ENGLISH STYLE." (Eec. July 22, 11.15 p.m.) London, July 22. ' Pearee lost much ground in going too far into the bay. Barry was eight lengths in the lead at Barnes. He then slowed down and sculled well within himself to tli© finish. The "Sportsman," reviewing the lace, says that the contest was a disappointment. "But it was a clean, honest race. Bnriy novor won more handsomely. or ■more easily. T.otirco's stylo is typically A-ustratian, svnd not suited to tho Thames. r VV\c W.a\V" ■mwsvvVs t\\e to suit is . a triumph of stylo against strength. The "Standard" says that tho victory ms "a triumph for tho Ei)£]is}i stjle, proving- it to be Uid best for a lonjr course."
